First you would select a spot that aligns with permanent features so you could relocate it. Before digging, you should carefully set aside any surface debris so you could replace it afterward to disguise the digging location. A smart way would be to tamp the earth well as you cover the cache container so it will not settle, leaving a telltale depression. Remember an off-site cache is your back-up survival plan in the event your home is raided by looters or you are forced to vacate due to crisis. Also great for: Wilderness Survival gear Establishing A Safe Site: Scope Out A Potential Cache Burial Area: Take an afternoon road trip and find someplace in the direction of a possible retreatable area that appeals to you. Spend time watching the area; see who is coming and going, and get a general feel for the area. Hiking in with camping supplies makes this seem plausible to most people. It’s an easy excuse if you are confronted by anyone. Get to know the area like it was your back yard. If possible, map out every ridge, every hollow, water sources, hill tops, and access points. You want to become an expert at the layout of the land. That way, even at night, you can maneuver through the brush with little noise. Preparations For Survival: Slide into the area one dark raining evening. Bury your Stash 'N Stow cache someplace that you can easily locate it. Make sure it’s near some old crooked tree, a fork in a trail, or some other easily identifiable feature. Cover your tracks leading to and from the cache, and be done with it. Slide back out, and never return to that exact spot again. Over the next few months, establish other Stash 'N Stow cache’s in various areas around your safe area. It’s a safe bet to not put all your supplies in one single area. Spread them out. For example; I would bury the first cache beside a certain tree, then walk 100 paces North, and bury another cache there; walk another 100 paces North, and do the same again. During one single summer, you could potentially cache several Stash 'N Stow Pails this way; thereby reducing the amount of stuff you will need to haul during a single outing. The items that you bury are what you feel you will need the most. Each cache should contains some food supplies, clothing, gear, medical supplies, light, heat, self defense gear and other subsistence supplies. For instance - Do not put all food items in one cache or all medical supplies in another. If one cache were to be discovered you would be less these valuable items. From time to time, sneak into the area and check it out. See if anything has been disturbed, or if you can find human tracks leading towards your buried cache. An excellent location would have a nearby water source, such as spring, river, pond. Anyplace that will provide you with plenty of water, yet a low chance of flooding. In whatever area you choose, remember this: Stay out of State Parks, and National Forests. These areas will be filled with other survivalists and are monitored by rangers. Never make it easy for somebody to get into your survival cache. Look for an area that seems inaccessible. A good choice is a thick overgrown thorny area, sides of a steep hill, any place that people would consider difficult. Do not build any campsites, hunt, fish this area during “normal” times. People tend to go where other people have gone before them. It’s easy to leave a trail, it may be followed by somebody, eventually. Scope the area out, bury your cache containers and leave.
